The product development had to meet mechanical and microstructural requirements.
Looking at the mechanical requirements, it can be seen that the flow and tensile properties are high, and that triaxial forging and heat treatment would necessarily be the differentiators for meeting the requirements.
Furthermore, grain alignment was necessary for the product to function properly, as the part in question would bear heavy loads and act as a spring, absorbing vibrations from the equipment.
After evaluating the microstructure characteristics, steel properties, and empirical data, we directed the heat treatment toward controlled cooling, achieving success in mechanical properties with less geometric distortion.
The final machining process was designed as an initial in-line turning process followed by face grinding to achieve productivity and repeatability.
